Purebred dogs and cats do not have a simple first name. If they want to earn a place in the family register, this first name must begin with a fixed letter, different each year.
In 2024, it will be the letter X in Belgium and V in France. A quick overview of the rules in force...
The least we can say is that the arrival of a new member in the family is an upheaval! Whether you're getting ready to welcome a puppy or a kitten home, the checklist of things to do is long. Among the first tasks to accomplish: find a name!
How to choose a dog or cat name without pedigree?
Are you preparing to welcome a dog or cat without a pedigree? No pressure in this case! You are completely free to choose its name. It can therefore start with any letter.

The most given dog names in recent years: Nala - Rio - Simba - Maya - Snow - Tokyo - Tao - Olso - Ruby - L ucky
Dogs and cats respond well to names with no more than two syllables. So avoid long names!
And for purebred cats and dogs, with pedigree?
Are you more of a purebred dog or cat ? So you can of course choose the name of your little protégé (unless the breeder has already done so) but you must take certain rules into account. Rules that differ from one country to another...
In Belgium
Every purebred dog or cat must have a name beginning with a letter fixed according to his year of birth.
- All letters are authorized so the same letter comes back... every 26 years!
- These letters differ for dogs and cats.
- Each feline club uses a different letter, unlike kennel clubs united within the same federation.
- Lacking inspiration? No matter, you can always name your dog whatever you want. All you have to do is ask the breeder to add the letter designated as an apostrophe. In year "W", you can call your dog Léo, who will become W'Léo in the stud book.
In Belgium, dogs are registered in the stud book of the SRSH (Royal Society of Saint-Hubert) and cats... they do not (yet) have an official register or book. Complicated !
This year, in Belgium, it’s the year of X! A little inspiration in this difficult year...
Xeres - Xani - Xavier - Xilo - Xera - Xindi - Xelda - Xora - Xome - Xorro - Xenon...
In France
When it comes to naming, French rules are similar to those in Belgium. In any case in principle because, in practice, the letters are different, the K, Q, W, X, Y and Z having been abandoned because they were considered too restrictive . This year, it is from the names starting with a “V” that we will have to draw.
In France, any purebred dog or cat must be registered in the register of dogs (Livre des Origines Français - LOF) or cats (Livre Officiel des Origines Félines - LOOF).

In the Nederlands
In the Netherlands generally, it is the breeder who chooses a name . In principle, the choice of name is completely free, but often a name is chosen based on the serial number of the litter.
The first born receives a name with the letter A, the second a name with the letter B, ...
